For laser range finders, is it still the rule of thumb to cut in half the advertised range as the max reliable range for that rangefinder? Or are companies getting better with this.

I have the Vortex HD 27-60. I had a really bad habit of spotting at max magnification until I picked up the ranging eyepiece. At 22x it’s perfect and I can still see hits.
