The Everday Sniper Podcast Episode 237 Finding Balance in your Rifle System
So I have a GAP / Manners PRS TCS Rifle chambered in 6GT here and it's pretty amazing to see where a competition rifle has gone. This is a 20LBS 6GT that just hammers and does not move. My first GAP Team Rifle from George came in at 10.7LBS with an S&B 5-25x, this one is 20LBS.
The rifles just sit in the bags and on the tripod and don't move. Part of the accuracy equation in this system is the super light trigger. It takes some getting used to, but you can have proper trigger control with an evil light trigger, but you have to be vigilant.
My question is, how do we balance a field or tactical rifle to take advantage of the innovations in a PRS rifle? What is the right trigger weight to rifle weight equation?
It's something that hit me after shooting the rifles.
Thanks for listening, Thanks for sharing, and don't forget to comment.

On the weight to caliber I would say go on JBM and play with the weights in the recoil calculator

Balance needs to be different for the discipline, and the further we get away from PRS/NRL Ko2m and F class the more we need to focus on fundamentals and safety. I'm having a hard time transferring the idea of a "balanced rifle" to a hunting rifle. Weight of the rifle goes down, trigger weight goes up and recoil also goes up. Mental block for me there. Strictly speaking competition, this episode was great! I've been waiting for you to jump on stocks/chassis for a while and I'm glad to see you're hitting it hard! I'd love to hear more about non competition oriented gear but theres nuggets in every episode and a lot to learn from the comp guys.

So I'm listening to this podcast while driving in my pickup with my phone hooked up listening over the vehicle speakers, when talking about the trigger poundage you hit the machine gun noise button and I thought I was in a damn drive by. I just about shit my pants!

The weight people are putting into guns is crazy I reckon Frank. My new 6.5PRC build is 11lbs and it shoots nicely. It's just the players playing the game, they should bring more movement into the matches to swing it back. No respectable bunyip hunter is going to go into the field with a 20lb bang stick.....

Call me crazy Frank but I’m not a fan of super lite triggers my 308 is 19 lbs with a 2.5 lb trigger. A-5 stock from back in the day a Shilen 24 inch straight taper pushing a 178gr ELD-M at 2810fps. (BTW thanks for the tip on the 2000-MR) That’s the same speed I’m getting out of a stock RPR 6.5CM with Prime 130s. The SMK has a better BC but not by much.

Thanks Frank, this made me think a lot. I'm not really interested in chasing Finales. I want to be a better Marksman and test myself a few times a year. I'm not going to be chasing the latest caliber or trend. I'm going to focus more on running what I've got. Being proficient with it and learning to read the wind better. My 7 Foxtrot range down here in San Antonio gets plenty of wind to practice with.

I think the balance is in two-stage triggers. It allows you to mate your finger to the trigger. Find the wall of the second stage and press thru. In my mind it will reduce the finger taps and allow the shooter to index his finger in the same spot.
